"THE FUTURE IS BASED ON ALTERNATIVE ENERGY." INTERVIEW WITH KONSTANTIN BOGATOV.
Kostyantyn Bogatov is the head of a company that grows and processes energy vines for fuel in Volyn, particularly in Ivanychy. With the beginning of Russia's invasion of the territory of our country, it became clear that Ukraine should get rid of any dependence on the aggressor state, including energy. Green energy came in handy. One of the pioneers in the introduction of green energy, was the company "SALIX ENERGY", which since 2010 has been growing vines for the production of wood chips as a source of heat and electricity.
In 2014, Salix Energy, in cooperation with Avanti-Development, built three biofuel boilers in the village of Ivanychi. This made it possible to completely abandon the use of gas for heating in all communal institutions of the village, where about 7 thousand residents live.
To learn more about alternative energy and further development in Ukraine, BUG spoke with Kostyantyn Bogatov, co-owner of SALICS ENERGY and Avanti-Development companies.
We will remind you that in 2014, a project was implemented in Ivanychy, within the framework of which the company "Avanti-Development" completely transferred the entire budgetary sphere to heating with wood chips of its own production. Thus, the main boiler rooms in the village were reequipped at the expense of the investor. One of them heats the hospital, the other - Lyceum No. 1, and another one - the central buildings: a kindergarten, the House of Culture, the tax inspectorate, the administrative building of the village council, libraries, an inclusive center and a music school.
During a conversation with “BUG” journalists, Kostiantyn Bogatov told why he decided to engage in green energy, what difficulties he faced at the beginning and how he managed to overcome them. And Kostyantyn also talked about plans for the construction of a plant for the production of fuel pellets (pallets) from ecologically clean biomass.

THE LARGEST PLANTATION OF ENERGY WILLOW IN EASTERN EUROPE WAS ESTABLISHED IN VOLYN.
The Ukrainian company Salix Energy grows energy willow on an area of 1.7 thousand hectares in Volyn. This is the largest area of plantations of energy crops in Eastern Europe.
"For years, we have been accustomed to using classic sources of energy, such as gas and coal. We grow a renewable source of energy. We planted once and have been harvesting for 25 years," said Iryna Hnap, director of the Salix Energy Agro-Energy Company.
For the climatic zone of Ukraine, among energy plants, the fast-growing variety of willow Salix Viminalis is the most suitable for cultivation. Seedlings are planted in a checkerboard pattern. Their number per hectare is determined depending on the planned harvest cycle. The crop is harvested with the help of special machines, of which there are only a few in the world. After cutting, the culture is restored again. In addition to the production of thermal and electrical energy from the collected biomass, it is used for the production of solid biofuel (pellets, briquettes). Energy plantations also prevent soil erosion and improve ecology. When biomass is burned, as much CO2 is released into the atmosphere as was absorbed by the plant during its growth. Herbicides and other agrochemicals are not used during cultivation. Since 2016, the company has been a member of the SEEMLA program. The main goal of the program is the sustainable cultivation of biomass on marginal lands in Europe. An important part of the project is ensuring environmental and socio-economic sustainability, preventing negative impact on biodiversity, flora and fauna, soil and water.

ENERGY WILLOW: HOW ORGANIC FUEL IS GROWN IN VOLYN.
In Volyn and Lviv Oblast, the Salix Energy company has been cultivating the largest plantations of energy willow in Eastern Europe for eight years - 1,700 hectares. In our region, this crop is grown in Gorokhiv, Ivanychiv, Lutsk and Lokachyn districts. Since 2011, enthusiasts managed to develop this promising and innovative business from scratch, because until then no one was engaged in the cultivation of renewable energy sources.
The global crisis of 2008 forced businessmen to look for new opportunities and areas of work in order to stay afloat. So Salix Energy decided to develop an innovative business and grow biomass - cod, from which thermal and electrical energy is extracted.
